Area under crops and type of crops: Winter wheat - 300-350 ha, summer barley - 60-80 ha, alfalfa - 15 ha.

Have you expanded the area of land under the technology being tested since you first started experimenting with this package: Yes

Please provide more explanation, if Y to the above: At present, winter wheat was directly sowed in 196 ha in conditions of irrigated agriculture, alfalfa – directly sowed in 15 ha and winter wheat – on raised bed in 126 ha.

Why are you interested in this technology package? What are the most beneficial outcomes that you have attained since testing this technology? Under direct sowing of winter wheat, the direct costs of production decrease by 32-40 % compared with the traditional technology. Use of raised bed technology of winter wheat cultivation allowed to reduce twice the norms of seed application compared with wide broadcast sowing. Under direct sowing of alfalfa direct factor costs decrease by 17-28 % and germination rates increase.

What is the next best alternative to use your land, if you did not implement this technology package? If resource-saving technology of direct sowing of winter wheat and alfalfa were not applied, then alternative would be a minimum soil tillage or earlier accepted traditional technology.

What are the main advantages/benefits of this technology package being tested relative to the next best alternative that you identified? The technological package of direct sowing of alfalfa and winter wheat and a raised bed method of winter wheat sowing will considerably lower direct and production costs together with a possibility to produce competitive crop production.

Elite and seed-growing farm Karabau LLP, Sapa LLP of Kazygurt district, and Tassay base station of the «Southwest scientific research institute of the animal husbandry and crop production» of the Southern Kazakhstan province.

What are the main challenges that you have faced since initiating this demonstration site? Lack of the specialized seeder, insufficient means for purchasing of herbicides, mineral fertilizers, shortage of sprayers.

In your opinion, is this technology package suitable for all types of farmers? The offered technological package is suitable to all forms of organizations. A limiting factor of their wide introduction into a production is lack of seeders for direct sowing, shortage of sprayers, weak financial capacities of the farmers, weak knowledge and absence of information on the new innovative technology.

Is this technology package relevant for females in your household? Yes.

(interview to probe on whether the technology package has affected the number of hours that females provide to agriculture, or whether it has made certain production practices easier (less labour intensive) for women (but also men))

Introduction of the offered technology leads to the considerable reduction of the technological operations: labor resources are freed during the sowing periods and crop care during the vegetation period. Manual works of women and men are considerably reduced.

If you had to pay the full cost for implementing this technology package, would you have initiated this demonstration site? It is desirable to support farmers by bearing expenses for the fuels and lubricants, fertilizers and herbicides. If possible, supporting the farmers financially is required as without such a financial support it will be problematic to carry out recommended technologies of direct sowing of winter wheat and alfalfa and bed and furrow sowing.

Please propose at least one advice that you would like to provide to the agricultural research community or a desire for the development of technologies that can assist you in improving your household’s wellbeing?Whenever possible the scientist-author of these technologies should visit the farmers during sowing time and a couple of times during plant growth at the moment of application of herbicides and mineral fertilizers.
